Isn’t it interesting that state House Speaker Jim Black can, at his leisure, suddenly appoint six more members to the Finance Committee so as to ensure the tax plan he favors gets cleared through this committee (news story, June 15). I guess it’s just politics as usual in North Carolina. Why are statewide elections even held, when one or two politicians (Black and Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight) seemingly control all that is, or is not, passed in the legislature?
