I was amused to hear last week that Elizabeth Dole loaned her campaign $3 million. It’s more amusing now that I’ve read Jim Morrill’s awesome blog entry with her reaction to Erskine Bowles doing the exact same thing six years ago.
‘TAKE A LOOK AT THIS,’ she wrote in an e-mail to thousands of supporters in October 2002. ‘My opponent loaned nearly $3 million of his personal wealth to his own campaign. …
‘I do not have that kind of personal wealth,’ Dole wrote. ‘So, to continue setting the record straight I must be able to count on the generous support of friends like you.'”
I guess this means Liddy now has that kind of personal wealth? Riiiiight … as if she didn’t then. We all know how lucrative ED can be. How nice of her to flaunt it in these sensitive economic times. Then again, it could mean she can no longer rely on the generous support of whichever of her “friends” received that message back in the halcyon days of 2002. Either way, it’s today’s reminder that Kay Hagan has Dole on the ropes, which is more than I would’ve hoped for at this time last year. Lest you be tempted to worry about Liddy’s finances, let me hasten to reassure you:
According to an analysis of disclosure forms by the Center for Responsive Politics, only six senators are wealthier than Dole. She had holdings valued at between $18.5 million and $69.2 million.
