LaRoque, a Kinston Republican, submitted his resignation this afternoon, one week after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of stealing from two federally-funded non-profits he ran.
His resignation came into the House Principal Clerk’s Office just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The letter LaRoque sent announcing his resignation, effective Aug. 1, can be seen here.
From LaRoque’s resignation letter:
I also have made it clear that I am proud of the work I have done in my non-profit corporations. We have worked hard to help people.
N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis also released this statement:
Last week, I advised Rep. LaRoque to step down from his seat in the North Carolina House in light of the allegations against him. Today, I believe he has made the right decision to resign and focus solely on the legal matters before him. This decision is in the best interests of his family, his constituents, and his state. I wish Rep. LaRoque and his family well in the trying weeks and months ahead.
