Pat McCrory: Overmatched and confused to the end, lets loose last broadsides

There are, thankfully, less than 48 hours left in the governorship of Pat McCrory, but as has been his wont from the start, the soon-to-be-ex-Guv let loose another barrage of inane and blame-shifting comments yesterday in a typically maddening interview with WRAL. (As an aside, let’s hope Gov.-elect Roy Cooper treats his role as symbol of our state a little more seriously and dons a tie for these kinds of appearances. McCrory’s stubborn casualness about his role as state leader has always mystified.)

Here are a few remarkable excerpts:

On his term in office:

“It’s been a four-year battle against radical, left-wing groups. There was a coordinated approach to tar me, to stain me, and it never stopped.”

On the opposition to HB2:

“They were going to make North Carolina the epicenter of an issue none of us had ever heard of before, and it’s a sad commentary that that epicenter continues to remain.”

On last week’s failed special session on HB2:

“I was going through deja vu. There’s a lot of people on the left that want this issue to keep going. There’s a lot of money being raised on it.”

It’s a sad commentary that the poor man actually appears to believe all this stuff. Mind you, this is from a person who blatantly lied about his stance on a woman’s right to obtain an abortion and then let his lawyers argue in federal court that transgender people don’t even really exist and can be “cured” of the ir “mental illness.”

As Chris Fitzsimon detailed earlier this month, McCrory was the mayor who never figured out how to be Governor. Sadly, yesterday’s interview makes clear that he’s going remain confused and overmatched right up until the end and beyond.
