Woodhouse walks back claim that legislature is considering impeachment of Supreme Court justices
It would be nice if GOP legislative leaders would follow suit As was detailed at some length in this morning’s edition of the Weekly Briefing, Dallas Woodhouse, a longtime conservative political operative, former executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, and current “investigative political analyst” for the John Locke Foundation’s Carolina Journal news outlet, […]
NC GOP’s judicial impeachment threats are a new low in Trump-like lawlessness
Impeachment. Like the snowflakes that flew last week in many parts of North Carolina, that word has been in the air in the state capital of late – darting crazily here and there in wild and erratic patterns and, ultimately, depositing a kind of icy blanket on state government. A few weeks’ back, right-wing politicos were rattling the impeachment saber at Superior Court Judge David Lee because they didn’t like his attempts to enforce the state constitution when it came to the right of schoolchildren in poor counties to a sound basic education.
Crazy impeachment talk from the NC right wing needs to stop
Memo to the North Carolina political right: Your crazy talk of impeaching elected North Carolina leaders because you disagree with their policy decisions and/or judicial decisions needs to stop. Besides making yourselves look utterly foolish, you’re ratcheting up our already overheated political atmosphere to new and dangerous levels — something that’s particularly unsafe when so […]
Weekend humor from Celia Rivenbark: Trump’s crack(pot) legal team
I don’t want to say Trump’s impeachment defense lawyers weren’t very good, but I imagine even Marjorie Taylor Greene sighed and said: “Whoa. And I thought I was a dangerous, dimwitted windbag” after opening arguments last week. Although the ex-president was acquitted, again, you have to admit his defense was wobbly at best. Trump appeared […]
Veteran journalist: Extremism the new norm as GOP aims to purge moderates
It is extremist to claim, in the complete absence of evidence, that the election was stolen. It is extremist to demand that millions of legal, valid ballots be tossed out by the courts, by state legislators, by Congress or the vice president. It is extremist to claim that those who upheld the election, who abided […]
Lessons from the second Trump impeachment
America missed an opportunity to deal a blow to right-wing extremism Despite a mountain of irrefutable evidence that Donald Trump was guilty of inciting an insurrection, the U.S. Senate acquitted him. History will record this vote as a shameful abdication on the part of Republican senators. Only seven of them had the decency and the […]
After voting not guilty, Tillis points to flaws in impeachment trial, says Trump ‘shares responsibility’ for January 6 violence
North Carolina’s two Republican U.S. Senators split on the issue of whether Donald Trump was guilty of inciting the attack on the Capitol January 6th. Senator Richard Burr was among seven Republicans to side with Democrats in voting 57-43 to convict the former president for his actions. [Read full coverage by our colleague Laura […]
Special report: Trump acquitted as Senate falls 10 votes short; Burr a surprising “aye”
Tillis joins 42 Republicans in voting to acquit as seven others join 48 Democrats and two independents in adjudging Trump guilty WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate voted on Saturday to acquit former President Donald Trump on a charge of inciting the deadly Jan. 6 insurrectionist attack on the U.S. Capitol, concluding his second impeachment trial with the same verdict as his first impeachment.
Evidence has already convicted Trump, even if Tillis, Burr lack the courage and integrity to do so
It’s possible to imagine even more shameful behavior from an American president than the nation witnessed from Donald Trump. He could have literally murdered someone in the middle of the street with his own hands — the act he once infamously bragged he could pull off without punishment. He could have directly consorted with a […]
GOP senator blasts Trump legal team’s ‘terrible’ performance, supports impeachment trial
WASHINGTON — Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana was one of six GOP senators who voted Tuesday to uphold the Senate’s authority to hold an impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, taking Republicans aback by reversing the position he took in a vote last month. Speaking to reporters Tuesday evening, Cassidy also contrasted the “focused, […]
What Senate Republicans are saying about Trump’s impeachment trial
WASHINGTON — The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is set to begin Tuesday, when the Senate will start hearing arguments over whether Trump should be convicted of inciting the violent mob that lay siege to the Capitol. So far, no Senate Republican has outright backed a vote to convict Trump, and many […]
