Members of the House passed a bill Wednesday evening that would prohibit gender-affirming surgery for minors in North Carolina. On a fast track to passage, House Bill 808 cleared the House Committee on Health on Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon legislators in the House Rules Committee advanced the bill to the House, where it passed by […]
NC fast tracks legislation to ban gender-affirming surgery for minors
Without questions or debate, members of the House Committee on Health advanced legislation Tuesday that would block gender-affirming surgical care for minors in North Carolina. “If you are under the age of 18 in North Carolina, you cannot get a tattoo at all, even with your parents consent. You can’t get a body piercing other […]
Biden rule on transgender athletes would set conditions on school sports bans
The Biden administration will advance a rule to make it more difficult for schools to exclude transgender youth athletes from competition based on their gender identity, a senior U.S. Education Department official told reporters Thursday. Monday numbers: North Carolina and the national wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation
Last week, Policy Watch delved into the stories of LGBTQ youth as new bills legislating their education, healthcare and identities work their way through the North Carolina General Assembly. Bill targeting transgender athletes for exclusion receives a hearing in state House committee
Julie Katz came to Raleigh Wednesday to speak directly to the lawmakers who want to exclude her from women’s sports. A 16-year-old transgender girl from Greensboro, Katz has been a gynmast, played tennis and volleyball -- all, so far, without incident. But House Bill 358 would bar transgender women from playing women’s intramural, public school, university sports in North Carolina.
Monday numbers: A closer look at the challenges faced by transgender youth and the consequences of alienating them
Last month Republicans in North Carolina joined a nationwide conservative push to file legislation targeting transgender youth. GOP lawmakers in the state House and Senate filed bills to bar transgender women from competing against other women at schools and universities, target transgender health care, force teachers and counselors to report children who exhibit “gender nonconformity,” and legally protect scientifically debunked “conversion therapy” that seeks to "cure" LGBTQ people.
